The freedom to collectively publish contents online for public consumption has opened the avenue for collaboration between education boards, teachers and students in content creation and sharing. The Wetpaint wikis for educators outlines how individuals such as students and groups such as classrooms, teachers, PTOs and global groups are using the power of wiki to create and share information.
The design of Vicki Davis’ Study Hall homework schedule makes me realize the place of a wiki in designing an interactive timetable for my school where students can get access to teacher’s notes and instructions for a particular lesson within a given week. The teachers would have to edit the content of the notes as they change week after week. As the use of terminologies are common in Art lessons, students can be asked to collectively compile and explain some art terminologies using the power of wiki. The compilation would serve as a reference as they build on their art vocabulary. A wiki is another medium of writing a concise report on a research project. Colleague teachers can also use wikis to share their areas of expertise to help broaden the general knowledge in the subject areas just like the Greetings from the World project.
The 1001 Flat World Tales is a group wiki encouraging young students to write and publish their stories online. It is a protected website granting only the members access to edit the publications. It has links to external website where winning stories are published. The page highlights the importance of wikis in bringing together students around the world on a common platform to share ideas and learn. The idea of page protection will make it for students in my class to have the sole responsibility of editing their works even as other students get access to the content. Teachers would also see their instructions posted online kept intact.
Code Blue is a wiki page made up of compilation of websites that deal with health related issues as well as linking pages that help students to learn about the body systems. Selected medical terminologies have also been explained with illustrations. Biographies of some medical professionals have also been linked within the wiki page. This page could serve as a model for starting a wiki that explains art terminologies while opening the opportunity for student to get access to short biographies that have personally been written by art professionals themselves.
Many pyrographers have different ways of executing their works. To take a survey of how these artists go about their works, students can model their wiki on the Schools in the Past project where the page is public and as such any visitor to the page can edit the content. The wiki page tries to record information about people’s view of how schools have changed. It therefore seeks to get the information from individuals such as parents and grandparents who experienced schooling in the past. The page will eventually provide a generally picture of the differences between schools in the past and at present.
I see wiki to be a working tool for teaching, learning and the general organization of education. It made sense to me anytime professors advised students not to site wikipedia as a reference since it is not seen by many as a credible source. I held the notion that students would have nothing new to publish in wiki since wikipedia contained virtually any information under the planet. It is now clear to be how wikis can be useful when it comes to group report, project preparation, and documentations peculiar to a particular school.
