This course has been an eye-opener for me as a teacher and a wake-up call as a student. I have learnt about a lot of internet tools that can be integrated in lessons for better results, and those that have broadened my knowledge about computing and social networking.
I just visited Google Reader to access blogs of colleague students, because I could not access them via the course page- the power of RSS. The course offered me the opportunity to practice with Blogging and embedding of files for the first time. The potential of these tools in my classroom is numerous. My future classroom would probably be paperless- thanks to Edmodo. I remember good projects that my students in Ghana did, majority of which were only seen by the school community. Mixbook, Flickr and Voicethread would have been a great way of letting other people outside the school community see the projects. Students provided answers to quizzes on paper when Socrative could have saved time. I have developed a particular interest Screencasting. I always wondered how it was done.
I have come to understand why this course is said be for certified teachers, especially those who are practicing. It gives the opportunity to implement the new tools learnt. Online course was a head-ache, not in its structure but for a first timer who comes home from work tired. I realized that one needs to be disciplined to be able to cope with an online class. Only interest kept me going.
I might be out of classroom for now, but I have been doing some coaching to former staff members in my own small way. They are always online, but they still mark students essays in exercise books. I see myself being ahead after taking this course. Hopefully I would get the opportunity to turn things around.
