The use of Portable On-Demand Broadcast (Podcast) has come to solve the problem of missing an entire lesson if a student is not able to tune in to a live radio lectures that are carried out with the traditional radio. Podcasts are recorded and stored for the audience to retrieve whenever they are ready to listen.
Listening to the Grammar Girl podcast on the use of “compare with” and “compare to” made it clear to me the advantages podcasts have over the traditional radio when it comes to their use for instructional purposes. Students do not miss out on the broadcast once there is an Internet access to download. Podcasts are categorized in iTunes and with my interest in education, art and technology, there were a number of podcasts available to listen or subscribe to. Searching “printmaking” in the iTunes Store, Art 21 came up as one of very informative Podcasts that could be listened to. It showed that a podcast could either be audio or video. TEDTalks have a list of podcasts that are very informative.
Frequent upgrade of the iTunes software has made a year old tutorials on how to navigate on the iTunes practically unworkable. It is therefore advisable to explore the most current version of the software to know how it works. Currently, podcasts accessed via iTunes can be listened to only on a computer or an ios device by syncing the device to the computer. An alternative to syncing is directly downloading the podcast onto the device using the Apple Podcasts app. To sync the device for the podcast to be on it, the podcast first has to be downloaded by clicking the price of the download.

Podcast in general has come to serve as one of the major tools used in distant education where limitations such as student location, large class size and individual schedule have made the traditional classroom learning practically ineffective. Students are now able to playback educational discussions and teacher instructions at their own convenience. Podcast could be used as a review tool by the elementary, middle and high school students. Students can now concentrate on teacher demonstrations instead of taking note on the activities. Students producing podcasts would not only raise their level of speech but also how to prepare by way of research before speaking to audience.
